Liquid crystal display (LCD) screens are the product of choice for the modern consumer, and are typically standard with newer desktop and most laptop computers. LCD screens run on less power than CRT monitors, they take up much less space and provide a sharper image. To avoid smudges, and to protect the light coating on LCD screens, they need careful cleaning. There are several ways to clean LCD computer monitors.

Things You'll Need

  • Non-abrasive cloth (microfiber or 100 percent cotton)
  • Multisurface spray or wipes
  • Monitor cleaner or wipes
  • Distilled water
  • Isopropyl alcohol

Instructions

    • 1

Turn off the power to the LCD monitor and unplug it. This will prevent electrical shocks and damage to the monitor.

    • 2

Use a multisurface cleaner from a brand-name manufacturer (see Resources). Household cleaning product companies make wipes and sprays that can be used on your LCD computer monitor. If you use a spray, spray the cleaner on to a cloth (microfiber or 100 percent cotton) first. If you use a wipe, clean the LCD monitor after you clean other items, to avoid putting excess solution on the LCD monitor. Wipe in a consistent motion: up and down, side to side or in a circular motion.

    • 3

Use a product designed to clean LCD screens. Some products in this category are marketed specifically for televisions or computer monitors, but they can be used interchangeably (see Resources). Use the products as directed.

    • 4

Clean the LCD computer monitor with a lightly dampened cloth (100 percent cotton or microfiber). Use distilled water, if possible, and wring out the cloth well. Wipe the screen in a consistent motion.

    • 5

Mix your own cleaning solution of 50 percent isopropyl alcohol (90 percent or more solution) and 50 percent distilled water. This is the mixture in many commercial monitor cleaning solutions. Put a small amount of the solution on a cloth and wipe the LCD screen.

Tips & Warnings

  • Wipe the screen lightly, and avoid pressing on the screen.

  • Avoid touching the screen with your fingers at all times, not just when cleaning, to avoid smudging.

  • Do not clean with abrasive or wood-based products (such as paper towels), which can scratch the surface of your LCD monitor.
