How to Rewire a Chandelier

Even the most attractive chandelier is of little use if the wiring has gone awry. The lights may flicker, and worse, you may have a potential fire hazard. Rewiring a chandelier is the answer in these cases. With a bit of time, basic materials and tools, your chandelier will be as good as new. Does this Spark an idea?

Instructions

    • 1

Turn the power to the chandelier off at the breaker box.

    • 2

Remove the chandelier from the ceiling. Have a helper hold the chandelier while you disconnect the power connections at the ceiling and undo the hardware holding it in place. Put the chandelier in a spot where it's easy to work on.

    • 3

Disconnect the wiring leading to each bulb in the chandelier. It's useful to sketch out the wiring arrangement as you do this. Check each bulb socket. If they are still solid and not corroded, reuse them. Otherwise, replace the sockets with new ones of comparable size.

    • 4

Pull the old wiring out of the chandelier. Measure each piece for replacement.

    • 5

Replace the wires you've pulled out with new wiring of equivalent gauge. Connect the new wiring to the bulb sockets and secure the connections.

    • 6

Reconnect the chandelier to the ceiling wiring. Identify the wires that you disconnected earlier, and attach them to the chandelier's new wiring with wire nuts. To do this, strip back the insulation from the new wiring so that 1/2 inch is bare. Then put the wires you'll be connecting together, place a wire nut over them and twist. Secure the chandelier to the mounting hardware that you removed it from when you took it down. Turn the power back on and test the chandelier.
