Instructions

    • 1

Determine where in Wyoming you'd like to visit--Wyoming is a huge state. Unless you are planning to spend several weeks traveling around the state, your best option is to determine the portion of the state you'd most like to see.

    • 2

Make a budget for your trip. Determine how much you want to spend on travel (including airfare, car rental and gasoline), accommodations and meals. Most cities and towns in Wyoming have lodging and meal options at a variety of price points. Use your budget to determine how much money you can spend each day during your trip.

    • 3

Check out the Wyoming state tourism website to determine what events will be going on in the state during your visit. Some of the more well-known events include Cheyenne Frontier Days (mid-July), Green River Rendezvous (July) and Fort Bridger (Pinedale) Rendezvous (Labor Day). A trip to Wyoming would not be complete without seeing some bull-riding or calf-roping. Many cities in Wyoming host rodeo events on weekends throughout the summer.

Get a Wyoming guidebook, either by checking out a copy from your local library or picking up a personal copy at a bookstore. Check the copyright date on the book to make sure you are getting the most recent edition. Guidebooks are helpful in planning where to go, what to do when you get there, and where to stay and eat. If you plan to do a lot of driving during your trip, get an up-to-date map to keep in your car for navigation purposes.

    • 5

Pack your bags. Check the weather at your destination to determine what type of clothing you need to bring with you. Take into consideration that while summer days may be very warm, nights can be cool--especially at higher elevations in the Snowy Range or Grand Teton mountains. Also, snow is not unheard of at higher elevations during the summertime, so be sure to bring along multiple layers if you plan to head to the mountains. If you plan to hike or backpack, remember to bring along all the gear you will need. Although most towns have outfitter stores, you will save money if you bring along the gear you already own.

Tips & Warnings

  • If you are planning to start your vacation in southeastern Wyoming, consider flying into the Denver International Airport. Although there is an airport in Cheyenne, DIA often has much better airfares. Drive time between Denver and Cheyenne is about 1.5 hours.
