How to Remove a Type R Gear Knob

A custom gear knob is one of the most common aftermarket upgrades found in the interior of a manual transmission car. Whether you are replacing the Type R with a different custom knob or you need to remove it for another reason, unlike some gear knobs the Type R has a feature that requires an extra step to remove it.

Instructions

    • 1

Pull down any plastic casing that blocks the bottom of your gear knob. In most vehicles using a Type R gear knob, the casing should not need to be adjusted much--if at all--to remove the knob.

    • 2

Locate the locknut on the bottom of your gear knob. This is a 13 mm nut. You will need to use a vice or adjustable wrench to loosen the nut. Turn the nut one turn.

    • 3

Unscrew the gear knob. With the locking nut loosened, the knob should unscrew easily.

    • 4

Take the locknut off after you have removed the gear knob. Be careful when turning the locknut not to scratch it.

Tips & Warnings

  • Place a cloth between the wrench and locknut to avoid damaging the nut.

  • Be careful if you have to adjust the plastic casing, because it is fragile and can be damaged easily.
