How to Size Ski Helmets for Kids
While not generally required, a helmet is an excellent safety precaution for skiers. This is especially true for kids who aren't as experienced and may suffer a lot of falls. A helmet that doesn't fit properly doesn't provide appropriate protection and may even be a safety hazard. So be sure to get the right size for your son or daughter.

1
Take measurements. Ski helmet size is quite simple; it denotes the measurement of the head in centimeters.
-
2
Wrap the measuring tape around your child's head with it just above the eyebrows.
-
-
3
Write down the measurement so that you remember.
-
4
Fit the helmet. While the numerical measurement gives you a size, it's important for your child to try the helmet on to make sure that it fits properly. Different helmets in the same size can fit differently. For best results, go to a ski shop or sports store and fit in person. If you intend to purchase based solely on size, check on the return policy in case it doesn't fit properly.
-
5
Put the helmet on your child's head with the top just over his eyebrows. Adjust the chin strap to size, and fasten it so that it's secure around your child's chin.
-
6
Make sure there are no gaps between the helmet and your child's head. All helmet padding should be secure against your child's head and face.
-
7
Check to make sure that the helmet fits snugly. Have your child shake his head back and forth and move from side to side. The helmet should move with the head and shouldn't wobble independently. It should stay in position with the back just above the nape of the neck and the top just over the eyebrows. If it wobbles, try an alternate helmet or smaller size. It should be snug without being tight and uncomfortable.
