How to Make a Mummy Halloween Decoration

Many people love Halloween's scary decorations, spooky places, costumes and trick or treating. One well-liked ghoul is the Mummy, who rises from the dead all wrapped in funeral trappings in ancient Egypt. This is an excellent project for classroom decorations or a special display for the holiday.

    Instructions

    Things You'll Need

    • Large plastic doll
    • Lots of white cotton strips, such as gauze, about 2-inches wide
    • Scissors
    • Dirt

Starting with the head, wrap the cotton strips snugly around and around the doll, covering the hair and face, but leaving space for the eyes to look through. Wind the cotton strips around so they overlap each other at the edges. Work down the neck and body. Continue to the legs, wrapping one leg down first, then going back up and wrapping the second leg. Cut the end of the strip with scissors and tuck it into the wrapping.

Cover one arm starting at the hand, then work across the chest, crisscrossing, and wrap the other arm. Upon reaching the second hand, cut the cotton strip with scissors and tuck the end into part of the wrapping. Cut several strips of cotton 5-inches long. Slip each one randomly around the body to make it appear that the mummy wrappings are tearing away.

Rub a little dirt on the cotton strips wrapped around the doll's body. This will age the "costume" and make the Halloween mummy decoration look old. Display the mummy where children coming by at night for treats can see it. It can also be used as a prop and carried by a child dressed as a mummy out collecting candy.

    Tips & Warnings

    • Used dolls for this project can be found at thrift shops and garage sales. Any size doll will work well; but the bigger the better. After Halloween is over, pack it away for next year.
