Find a well-ventilated area to start your snow blower to avoid carbon monoxide poisoning. Carbon monoxide can fill up an enclosed area. Select a level area as well.

Wear safety goggles to avoid injuring your eyes with flying debris.

Remove as much debris from the area as possible before snow blowing. The debris can damage your snow blower and can fly up and hit you.

Keep your body parts away from the gears, chains and auger to avoid injury or amputation when starting your snow blower.

Hold tightly to the handle on the back of your snow blower with your weak hand and hold on to the handle of the cord to the gasoline engine with your dominant hand.

Raise the elbow that is holding the cord up and keep your arm bent.

Place one of your feet firmly on the ground and place all of your weight on that leg. This will provide leverage, allowing you to pull the cord with more force.

Pull the cord by extending your arm as rapidly as possible. If you have a healthy shoulder, throw your shoulder into it. Extend the cord as far as you can.
