Make Jeans Look Old

Distressed jeans (jeans that look old) are often in style. A pair of brand new jeans, often costing upwards of a hundred dollars, may come with rips in the knee and worn patches throughout. However, it doesn't take much to get the same look for a lot less right at home. Does this Spark an idea?

Instructions

    • 1

Choose some spots to distress. One fashion trend of vintage jeans is an area where the fabric has been worn thin or distressed. An easy way to distress jeans is to lay them on a flat, hard surface (like cement or plywood). Then use a knife to vigorously rub the fabric in the desired area until worn to the preferred level. If you rub harder and for a longer period, holes or tears may form in the fabric as well.

    • 2

Fray with sandpaper. A sheet of sandpaper is an easy (and cheap) way to get the worn look. Simply rub sandpaper along the hemline, pockets or any other areas. It may take a little while to create the initial fray, but it gets easier with time.

    • 3

Use a bit of bleach on the distressed areas, using a sponge or brush. This adds to the appearance of wear to the areas that have been frayed or distressed. The longer the bleach is left on the jeans, the more discoloration will occur.

    • 4

Tear away a pocket. A back pocket is generally simpler, but be careful not to rip a hole in the jeans.

    • 5

Stain the jeans, not excessively, with oil or grass. Apply oil lightly with a rag or brush. Grass stains could be added by physically rubbing against grass while wearing the jeans. Wash the jeans after adding stains.

    • 6

Wash and wash again. The natural way to make jeans look old is to wash and wear them; however, this can take a long time. The above steps will speed up the distressing process.

Tips & Warnings

  • Be careful when using the knife to distress areas.
