How to Apply Sunless Tanning Lotion for Best Results
Sunless tanning products make it possible to have a golden glow without the health risks associated with exposure to the sun's ultraviolet rays. Most self-tanning products contain the active ingredient dihydroxyacetone (DHA), which is a natural sugar that reacts on contact with the upper layers of skin. Sunless tanners come in a range of delivery methods, including creams, lotions, gels and sprays. The benefits of using a lotion include precise, non-greasy and non-messy application. 1
Buy a sunless tanning lotion appropriate for your skin tone. Choose a reputable brand that contains low levels of DHA for a subtle tan, combined with a natural substance called erythrulose. This helps give a longer lasting, natural-looking tan.
-
2
Exfoliate the area of the body you want to tan using a loofah or a gentle, oil-free body scrub product. This will remove dead surface skin cells to promote an even finish.
-
-
3
Apply a thin layer of light moisturizer to dry skin areas, such as the knees and elbows, to prevent over-absorption of color in these areas. Blend in the edges thoroughly.
-
4
Put on the gloves provided with your sunless tanning product or use standard cosmetic gloves.
-
5
Apply a thin, even layer of sunless tanning lotion, working up the body in small, circular motions without leaving any gaps.
-
6
Wait for your tan develop to develop fully - for the length of time specified by the manufacturer of your specific product - before dressing. If this isn't possible, wear loose clothing.

Tips & Warnings
If you are not using gloves, apply petroleum jelly to your nails and cuticles to protect them from staining during application.
For easier application, use a tinted self-tan lotion that enables you to easily see the areas you have covered.
Correct sunless tanning mistakes by soaking in a bath containing a sprinkling of baking soda. Alternatively you can exfoliate skin with a dry body brush before showering. Use fake tan correction wipes or a lemon wedge to fade away any streaks.
Always perform a test on a small patch of skin before full application to check for any allergic reaction you may have to the tanning lotion. Follow the instructions provided with your product. If irritation develops, do not use the product.
