Things You'll Need:
- comb
- brush
- steam iron
- ice
- plastic card edge
- fork or spoon
-
Step 1
One solution is to freeze the area with ice and then as ice melts it will soften the crushed carpet knap and you will be able to work with the carpet to bring the crushed carpet knap back to life.
-
Step 2
Leave the ice on at least overnight. It may even need to set on the carpet for a couple of nights. Watch for stains however. No use trading one problem for another.
-
Step 3
When the crushed carpet pile feels sufficiently soft, take a fork and gently raise the knap of the carpeting. Keep working it to bring it level with the rest of the carpeting.
-
Step 4
Raising the crushed carpet knap will extend the carpet life. You might try a small comb or any tool you have, to regenerate the crushed carpet knap.
-
Step 5
You can also try to raise the crushed carpet knap by using a steam iron. Fill the steam iron with water. When it is hot and steaming, hold it over the crushed part of the carpet but do not let it touch the carpet or it could damage it.
-
Step 6
Let the steam penetrate and soften the carpet knap so you can work it level again. Be careful and don't let the steam from the steam iron billow up and burn your hand holding the steam iron.
-
Step 7
When the carpeting is warmed and softened from the steam, you can pull up the carpet knap with a fork, loosen and scrape it with the edge of a spoon, use the teeth of a comb or even try a gift or credit card. Keep working the carpet area until the crushed area matches the level of the carpet.

on 6/5/2009 The ice solution is really interesting! I've found that dog/cat wire brushes work pretty well.
