1
Measure the space you will be designing. If you intend to do renovations to the space before you implement your design, take into account how adding a bookcase or new closet will affect your design.

2
Ask what your teenager wants her room. Even if the room is to be a surprise, you can still get a sense of what the teenager likes by talking to her about her favorite things. Don't set out to design a room that fits your taste, but instead design a room that your teen will feel is hers and that provides the most utility.

Sketch design ideas. This step depends a lot on what the room will be used for. A bedroom is much more personal than a game room, and is the room where your teen likely spends most of his time, from homework to relaxing. Look at colored swatches for walls, wallpaper, carpet or throw pillows. Hold on to samples you like. Good space-saving options include CD racks, extra closet space or a computer hutch.

Look online for savings on items such as posters and memorabilia from your teen's favorite artist or sports hero. EBay and other online auction sites are good places to look for specialty items that will put a smile on your teen's face.
