Building backlinks is one of the most important things you can do in order to get traffic to your websites, online articles, or blogs. It can be intimidating to try and build backlinks early on, but there are several ways to build a large number of backlinks to bring some of Google's love to your pages.

An easy way to gather backlinks is with article marketing. There are some people who say article marketing doesn't work. They're wrong. Article marketing allows for gathering a lot of keyword anchored backlinks. While ezinearticles is the biggest by far, there are literally hundreds of article directories out there that will take your article and give you links in return. Consider automated programs or services to help you send out these articles so you don't have to waste time sending them out manually.

Aside from article marketing, there are also certain "do follow" social bookmarking sites. Most social bookmarking is no follow, meaning Google doesn't count them (although Yahoo still does). Look for do follow social bookmarking for an easy smattering of backlinks. These aren't great backlinks, but they pass juice and to get good SEO rankings you need to build backlinks of all types.

Link directories. There are good link directories and bad link directories. DMOZ.org is famous as the best, and for being virtually impossible to get into. Look for human edited directories that never accept adult content, gambling, or other spam type topics. A lot of article directories require a "reciprocal link." Reciprocal backlinks aren't as good as one way backlinks, so make a links page. This way one weak website page can have all those directory links out while your home page gets all their backlinks to you. They're still better than nothing, and there are literally hundreds available for most websites.

Contact other website or blog owners. Many offer reciprocal links, or many will be willing to look at your site and review it if you ask. More backlinks.

Guest blogging. Make a post that gives the blog owner free content, and often in return you will get a link or two back to your website. This is a great way to gather backlinks for your website and/or blog.

Do follow blog comments. Type in "list of do follow blogs" into Google and you'll get lists to choose from. Looking for blogs with KeywordLuv is also a plus, and if you have a blog, also look for CommentLuv blogs.

Not a problem! Building backlinks has definitely been the hardest part of the learning process for me, but it really is amazing how far just a few keyword anchored backlinks can take you. -
