Decorate it Yourself Princess Crowns

If you are crafty and know how to sew a little, these decorate yourself crowns are a fun creative gift for a girl or boy ages 2 to 6.

Difficulty: Moderate
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • eva colored foamies (available at craft store)
  • sewing machine or needle
  • thread
  • ribbon
  • glitter glue
  • stickers, gems, pom pons
  • scissors
  • tube
  • paper for card
  1. Step 1

LAY OUT: Make sure your work area is clean. Lay your full sheet Foamie (12" x 18") skinny-wise on a table, 12" across and 18" high. Measure up 3". This is where you will start to draw your zig zag across the sheet to create the top of your crown. If you do this carefully, you will be able to use the other side of the zig zag for another crown, and have 2. Organize your decorating items: glitter glue, pom pons, gems, feathers and stickers to the side to include in your child's gift present later.

  2. Step 2
Draw four Crowns on Foamie Sheet

DRAWING: Draw a diagonal line up 1.5 inches and then back down again. Repeat this until you hit the end of the sheet. You can use ruler guides to help keep within the 1.5" area you are using for your zig zag. Then measure down 3" from the bottom of your zig zag to draw the bottom of your second crown. You can repeat these steps from that line (which should be centered on your sheet) and create 2 more crowns - giving you 4 total.

  3. Step 3
    Cut out the Crowns

CUTTING: Now cut out your 4 crowns. Organize your ribbon into 4 even strips by folding over at 30" each against a measuring stick. Cut all four ends of ribbon on a slant to keep the ribbon from fraying. You can use different color ribbons to make each crown unique. You can also use blue ribbons to create Prince Crowns and Pink Ribbons to create Princess Crowns.

  4. Step 4
    Sew Ribbon onto Crown

SEWING: Using the old fashion technology of a sewing machine, it is really easy. Fold your ribbon in half to find the center and line it up with the center of your crown. Then lay it down flat and position under the foot of your sewing machine. Sew a straight line from one end of the crown to the other. Then with the needle still in place, lift the foot and turn the crown and ribbon 90 degree to position the side of the ribbon in place to be sewn. Put the foot down and sew. Repeat until you have completed your rectangle and the ribbon is completely fastened to the crown.

  5. Step 5

PACKAGING: Take your clear mailing tube and squeeze your 2 - 4 crowns into the tube leaving the top ribbon hanging out. Then take your decorating items, glitter glue, pom pons, gems, stickers and put in the tube. You may even want to include a kids cupcake recipe, or party games for fun. Fold in the ribbon nicely and close with top cap. Take your card, punch a hold in it and thread a ribbon through the hole. Then tie it to your tube and your gift is done! Tell your gift recipient to make up a princess name & kingdom to rule for the day. Imagination is a great gift to give.

Tips & Warnings
  • You can purchase foamies on the internet too. You may want to chose a pink or purple foamie to create princess crowns and either blue or green for Prince crowns. If you are making a present for boys and girls, white works well for both.
  • If you use a little spray glue to hold your ribbon in place before your sew it, it is a little easier to sew straight.
  • If you do not have a sewing machine, you can stitch on the ribbon by hand.
  • Chose beautiful silk ribbons to create a crown that will always be cherished.
  • Always watch the small parts which can be a choking hazard with craft projects for children under 3 years old.
