How to Knit and Donate to Charity

It is not as difficult as it may seem to knit and donate to charity. Many knitters enjoy creating hand made items to donate for a good cause; and there are many charitable organizations that are happy to receive knitted caps, helmet liners, blankets, afghans, baby clothes and other knitted charitable donations. You don’t have to be an experienced knitter to donate to charity. There are many projects that beginning knitters can make to donate to someone in need.

Difficulty: Easy
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Make a list of the items you would like to knit and donate to charity. Research various charitable organizations that accept donations of hand knitted items and review any yarn and size requirements they may have before choosing a project.

  2. Step 2

To donate to charity, prepare an itemized budget for knitting materials and supplies. Determine the number of items you will knit and fund your project by seeking donations of money, yarn, knitting patterns and other items from knitting shops, department stores, friends and family. Save receipts for all purchases as you may be able to take tax deductions.

  3. Step 3

If you would rather not knit to donate to charity on your own, consider joining an existing group of charitable knitters or starting one. By joining a “knitting for charity” group, you can work on multiple community service projects that provide donations to several different charitable organizations; and the fellowship of being with like-minded knitters will be an added bonus.

  4. Step 4

Record your progress in a scrapbook or knitting journal. Take pictures of each knitted item, keep a sample of the yarn and include a copy of the pattern you used. If you are present when the knitted donations are presented to the charitable organization or its recipients, take pictures and include them in the scrapbook as well.

  5. Step 5

For large projects that have national focus (chemotherapy caps, helmet liners for our troops abroad, preemie caps, etc), work with other groups for a community-wide effort. This will allow for the greatest impact and enable more people to receive charitable donations.
