How to Make an Outdoor Tile Table

Outdoor tile tables are not only durable, they are also beautiful. A tile table can add a lot of character to an outdoor entertaining area...

Difficulty: Moderate
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Table
  • Tile
  • Tile Adhesive
  • Grout
  • Wet Saw
  • Trowel
  • Tile Spacers
  • Safey Glasses
  1. Step 1

There are 2 different techniques that I will share with you on making a tile table. The first one is creating a permanent tile table. You will need either a concrete table or a wood table.
The first thing you need to do is to measure the table. Length and width.
Find the center of the table. That is where you will start with your tile. The reason is so your tile will turn out uniform. Depending on the size of the tile will determine how many you will need. If you do not want to have to cut tile, choose a table that whole tiles will accommodate. In example, if you are using 12 inch x 12 inch tiles, you could use a table that was 3 feet by 3 feet. That would require (9) 12 inch tiles.
Read the instructions on the tile adhesive. This will tell you how to apply the adhesive. Use the spacers between the tile to keep them straight. After you have the tile down, wait the appropriate time before you grout between them. Usually, it is 24 hours. The instructions on the grout will tell you.
If you are using a concrete table, you may need to use a certain type of adhesive that is different than tile being adhered to wood. Talk to a specialist where you buy your supplies. If you are using a wood table, you may need to put down a backer board on the table before proceeding with the tile.

  2. Step 2

Another way you can tile a table is to lay out the tile butted together without using any grout or adhesive. With this method, you have to apply a strip of moulding that has an edge that will over lap the top of the table to hold the tile in place. This would allow you to change out the tile at a later date if you want a different color or if you needed to replace a broken or chipped tile. The moulding would be applied with screws and you would only have to remove the screws to loosen the moulding to change the tiles. This type of table would need to be wood or metal.

  3. Step 3

Search the internet on tile tables to get some ideas on the type of tile and look you would like to achieve. Some building supply stores sell dvds and books on different home projects. Some also offer classes.
If you can lay the tile yourself, this would be less expensive that buying a tile table.
