Wood cutting boards have been popular for generations. The past few years had seen people moving away from wood and using plastic cutting boards in their place. However, there seems to be a resurgence in the popularity of wood cutting boards. Wood cutting boards come in various sizes and are made from different species of wood. Styles also vary from a traditional one wood type to a butcher block style made from two or more different woods. Caring for wood cutting boards is easy with just a cloth and mineral oil.

Difficulty: Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  1. Step 1

Clean the cutting board with a mild soap and water being careful not to saturate the wood as the glue that holds the wood sections together can dissolve causing the sections to separate.

  2. Step 2

Pour a small amount of mineral oil onto the surface of the cutting board and rub it into the wood with a soft cloth. Wipe any excess off and the cutting board is ready for use.

  3. Step 3

If the wood is completely dry, it may be necessary to allow the mineral oil to soak into the wood before wiping any excess off.

Tips & Warnings
  • Oil a cutting board as often as necessary to keep the wood from drying out and possibly cracking.
  • Never put a wood cutting board in a dishwasher as the glue holding the board together may dissolve.
  • Never use vegetable or olive oil to treat a wood cutting board as they can turn rancid making the board smell and be potentially unsafe.
