Vinyl letter stencils are easy to apply to walls and other surfaces. They typically come on a sturdy backing with transfer tape on the other side. Vinyl letter stencils allow you to decorate a wall quickly and easily without the mess of paint and without the time and cost of having a stencil painted directly on the walls. Vinyl lettering can be used in commercial establishments as well as any wall of the house.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Microfiber dusting cloth
  • Level
  • Yardstick
  • Vinyl lettering or image
  • Transfer tool (spatula or other rubbing tool)
  1. Step 1

Clean the surface of the wall before you begin. If the wall is especially dirty, dust it with a microfiber cloth using warm water. Allow the wall to dry completely before applying the vinyl lettering.

  2. Step 2

Use a level/yard stick or ruler to draw guidelines for placing your stencil. If you skip this step, you may end up with crooked lettering. Do not try to eyeball placement of your lettering.

  3. Step 3

Cut your vinyl letter stencil into sections if the piece is large to make it easier to handle. Remove the backing carefully from the vinyl letters, keeping it attached to the transfer tape. (Vinyl lettering comes with transfer tape on one side and a protective backing on the other side.)

  4. Step 4

Place the sections on the wall and secure with regular masking tape to temporarily hold it in place. Rub the surface of the stencil backing with your tool (popsicle stick, plastic squeegee or spatula if tool is not provided) so that the letters stick to the wall.

  5. Step 5

Carefully remove the backing, starting from the corner edge to ensure that the letters separate from it and stick to the wall. If a letter pulls from wall, place the transfer tape back over the letters, and try again. If the lettering continues to stick to the transfer tape instead of the wall, you may have to hold the edge of the letters with a fingernail as you remove the backing and smooth the letters by rubbing it lightly with the transfer tool and your fingers.
