How to Setup a Google Alert

Google Alerts are email notifications of the latest search result based on a users choice of topics they wish to monitor. Google alerts are a great way to stay abreast of the latest news and articles that are posted online. A Google alert can be setup to send a notification for just about anything a person would like.

Instructions
  1. Step 1

    Obtain an e-mail account to use to receive an alert. Use an existing account or setup a new using GMail or Yahoo.

  2. Step 2

    Decide on the type of alerts to receive. Alerts can be sent for many different things such as people, places and events.

  3. Step 3

    Go to the Google Alerts web page and enter search terms. Multiple terms can be used or one alert can be setup at a time.

  4. Step 4

    Select the type of alert to receive. If comprehensive is used alerts will be sent for all types.

  5. Step 5

    Select how often to receive an alert and enter a valid e-mail address. Keep in mind that there can be very few or quite many alerts sent.

  6. Step 6

    Click on the blue link on the page to manage existing alerts. After an alert is set it may need to be deleted or changed.

Tips & Warnings
  • Alerts are a good way to receive notification when someone searches a name or article title.
  • Setting up too many alerts can result in many e-mails being sent.
