How to connect a DVD or Blu-Ray Player to the Internet

A network-enabled DVD player lets you watch streaming videos on your TV.

To connect a DVD or Blu-ray player to the Internet, it must include networking features. Some models are Wi-Fi ready, which means they can go online, but do not necessarily come with a wireless adapter. Other models have Wi-Fi built-in, and are ready to connect to a wireless router. Without wireless Internet, the other option is a wired connection that goes directly into the modem.

Things You'll Need

• Ethernet cable
• Router

Instructions

Wired Setup

1. Plug the Ethernet cable into the back of the DVD or Blu-ray player. It looks like a telephone jack, only larger.

2. Plug the other end of the cable into an available spot on the router.

3. Turn on the video player and wait while the device configures the proper settings to connect.

Wireless Setup

1. Turn on the player and use the remote to select "Network Settings," "Internet Settings," then "Wireless Setup (built-in.)

2. Select "Access Point Scan," then "Enter."

3. Choose your network from the list and press "Enter."

4. Press "Enter" to accept the default security, which is highlighted automatically.

5. Use the buttons on the remote to enter the security key. If you do not know it, enter the URL for your router into a Web browser, and log in. You wil need the code listed as "Passphrase" or "Security Key."

6. Select "Finish," and choose "Auto Acquisition" and "Auto" for the DVS server. If you use a manual setup, select "Manual" instead.

7. Select "Do Not Use" when asked about a proxy server.

8. Select "Finish" after the Diagnostics screen, and "Finish" again when it says "Settings are Complete."

Tips & Warnings

• If you have a Sony player, press "Home" on the remote, then choose "Network" from the on-screen menu. Select "Activate Enhanced Features" to receive a code to active the online features. Enter the code at Sony's My Essentials website.

• Visit Sony.com/blurayupdate for instructions finding the URL for your particular router.
