Step 1
Pick a tree that is known to be able to grow in your climate. If you are from Arizona, you don't want a Palm Tree.
-
Step 2
Make sure the tree that you pick is at least 2 years old. If the tree you have is not at least 2 years old, then it runs the chance of dying after being planted.
-
Step 3
Measure the distance from the bottom of the pot to where the dirt stops. Add roughly 6 inches more. Measure around the pot and add roughly 4 inches more.
-
Step 4
Dig the hole to these measurements.
-
Step 5
If the tree is in a plastic pot, take it out of the pot by grabbing the trunk at the base nearest the dirt. Be sure you do this over the hole you have made. Before setting the tree into the hole, gently unbind the roots by using your fingers to release the dirt holding them together.
-
Step 6
If the tree is in a pot that is made to be buried, cut off the bottom of the pot so you can get to the dirt and roots. Gently unbind the roots by using your fingers to release the dirt holding them together.
-
Step 7
Place your tree into the hole and have someone hold it straight while you place dirt back around the tree filling the hole. Once filled, push the dirt in around the tree to make sure it is sturdy enough to hold on its own.
-
Step 8
Get the hose and water the tree. The ground should be wet to the farthest leaf out. That will be where the roots go, therefore, you want to give the newly planted tree enough water to drink.
