Before you call a plumber to handle that clogged bathtub drain or clogged sink drain, why not pull out the plunger and try clearing the plumbing clog yourself? When it comes to a blocked drain, by reaching for the plunger you can save money on chemical drain cleaners too. Whether the sink or tub is not draining at all or draining slowly, try following these steps to blast that clog using a plunger.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions
  1. Step 1

The sink and tub will have overflow openings. Those openings need to be blocked so the force of the plunger is directed fully to the clog. That opening needs to be blocked. Stuff a wet rag into the overflow drain.

  2. Step 2

Fill the tub or sink with about 2 inches of water at the drain level

  3. Step 3

Place the plunger into the water on an angle to prevent air from getting trapped in the bell portion. (You can get a plunger at any hardware store; at Lowes, a plunger costs less than $3.)

  4. Step 4

With both hands on the upright handle, keep the plunger against the drain and force the handle down, let it pop-up, and press down again. Rapidly repeat 20 times. Lift the plunger. If the water does not flow out quickly, repeat 20 more times.

  5. Step 5

No results? Try liquid or crystal drain cleaning products to work through clogged plumbing.

Tips & Warnings
  • You can put a thick coating of petroleum jelly (e.g., Vaseline) around the lip of the plunger to ensure a snug seal.
