Tips on not spending more than you mean to in a grocery store.

Difficulty: Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Money
  • Grocery List
  • Calculator
  • Full Belly
  1. Step 1

Most people, when they go to a grocery store, go with out a list, an empty stomach, no calculator and in general, no idea what they need at the store. So when you get there, your brain starts telling you, you need everything.

  2. Step 2

First things first, always prepare a grocery list, know everything you'll need at the store, before you leave your house. If you know your grocery store, write the list, as if you were actually in the store shopping already. This will make your trip quicker and more convenient.

  3. Step 3

If you're hungry, grab a snack, before you walk out the door. This way when you get to the store, the urge to want to eat everything in sight, won't be there. This will keep your hands, off the items you don't need or truly want and your mind, on the grocery list.

  4. Step 4

Bring a calculator with you, know how much is in your budget to spend, at the store. So when you start punching numbers into the calculator, you'll know when you hit that magic number, that says, "stop buying."

  5. Step 5

Something you can do, before you shop, is to bring only as much cash, as you are willing to spend. Leave your credit, debit and check books at home, this will most definitely prevent you, from going over your limit.

  6. Step 6

Children can pose a different issue all together, they don't have the concept of money or what they actually need, generally wanting everything and stressing you out in the store. There are ways of making this challenge, become minimal.

  7. Step 7

Talk to them, before entering the store, lay down the guidelines, "we are here to get what is on the list and that is all." Let them help in the store, by grabbing things for you, from the sections you are in, this helps them to feel involved and keeps their minds busy.

  8. Step 8

If you feel generous, give them a reward at the end of shopping, such as, 50 cents for bubble gum or a sticker from the machines, in the exit ways. This is actually, a great way to reward positive behavior and help to make this behavior happen every time you need to shop. The reward should always fit the behavior and it doesn't necessarily have to be a gift, it could be a simple praise, like, "good job, I'm so proud of you." Even a simple, "Thank You," works well.

  9. Step 9

Now that you are at the store and ready to shop, look for deals, for the things you need. Most of the time, store brands are the cheaper way to go, but sometimes, the brand names will actually have a better deal on something. Look at the tags, that are placed under the items, these indicate how much an item costs per unit and in general, dictate the cheaper item.

  10. Step 10

I hope that these tips will be helpful to you, the next time you go shopping. I know that they help me and reduces my shopping time, by about 30 minutes as well.

Tips & Warnings
  • Unit price and actual amount within that product, helps to determine, which is the better bargain.
  • Don't be afraid to buy store brand, the only difference, is the pretty label.
  • Never go to the store hungry, you will want to buy everything, even if you don't need it.
  • Keep an eye on the manager's specials with meat, the date is important, because if your not going to use it or freeze it immediately, it gets wasted and you've lost money, not saved.
