Build Your Own Custom Room Divider or Privacy Screen

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • 3 1x12x96 inch Pine Boards
  • Sand Paper
  • Primer and Paint
  • OR Stain and Clear Coat
  • 8 Hinges
  • Electric Screwdriver
  • Rubber Tape
  1. Step 1

Go to your local hardware store and select 3 nice, straight, flat 1x12" by 8 ft Pine Boards * Most stores will cut these boards for you. By having them cut to 42 or 44" that gives you a trim on each end and will give you 6 equal pieces.

  2. Step 2

Select Primer & Paint. This is a good project to try your faux painting techniques. If the wood has some neat characteristics, you may just want to Stain & Clear Coat it.

  3. Step 3

Select Medium Grit Sand Paper & 8 Hinges (Brass or Brass Plated).Take these items home and go to work.

  4. Step 4

Sand & Prime & Paint or Stain Each Piece. Follow recommended directions to allow ample drying time.

  5. Step 5

Taking 2 pieces of wood, measure down 10 - 12" from top and bottom. Mark on the wood with pencil. Hinges come with screws. You will need to screw them into the wood with an electric drill or screwdriver. Allow space between boards so hinge doesn't bind.

  6. Step 6

Flip those two connected boards and on the other edge, add another board and repeat step 5 until you have 5 connected boards. You can do this with 4 or 6 pieces, but the balance is better with an odd number.

  7. Step 7

Add some rubber track (rubber tape) to keep this item from scraping your floors. Stand it up and there is your privacy wall.

Tips & Warnings
  • Make sure you hinges aren't too wide for the wood
  • Make sure your boards are even. If they are imperfect, keep them flush on the bottom rather than on top.
  • Decorating this piece can be incredibly fun. Treat it like a wall and add pictures or hooks for hanging light clothing items or necklaces.
