Transcendental Meditation has gained in popularity through Ayurvedic medicine, a five thousand year old system of mind and body medicine from India. Ayurvedic medicine and Transcendental Meditation has gotten a big push since Deepak Chopra has talked about it on Oprah. Transcendental Meditation (TM) is a simple meditation practice that can profoundly relax you and put you in a trance like state for better awareness.

Things You'll Need:

  • quiet place

Find a quiet place where you won't be disturbed, and begin by getting comfortable and relaxed. Make sure the phones are off, the kids and dogs are taken care of, and you have gone to the bathroom. If you think you might doze off, you will want to sit in a chair. Relax your muscles until your entire body feels relaxed.

With Transcendental Meditation, you will not try and control your mind or concentrate on your mind or focus on anything. You will repeat a mantra which can be anything you wish. I like the word money. Let your mind naturally drift. You will effortlessly come into a natural state of heightened awareness or cosmic consciousness. Relax yourself and let yourself become blissful while repeating your mantra.

  2. Step 2

Transcendental Meditation will get your mind in tune with everything in the universe, because you are totally open to its infinite possibilities.

You will begin to move deeper into a trance while you are saying your mantra and becoming one with cosmic consciousness. You are not asleep although it may appear somewhat dreamlike, as if you are sleeping. This is the hypnotic or trance state and you may not recognize it when you enter into it. This is your higher self.

It is OK to feel an out of body or floating sensation. This means your mind is getting in touch with the universal mind. While in this state, you may ask questions. How do I forgive? How do I achieve enlightenment? Whatever you wish to ask or ask for, do it now.

  3. Step 3
    Meditiation music

For beginners, gaining control over you own mind may be hard at first, because you are not used to being in control. With practice, it will become easier and more blissful. This is not a magic trick. It’s just you taking control over your own mind and thoughts, and learning to be aware.

Coming out of a trance is very easy. Simply open your eyes. Now don’t you feel better?
If you have insomnia you can use this technique to go to sleep. Just change your mantra.

Tips & Warnings
  • Try this in a bath and feel the water.
  • Practice each day for a few minutes.
  • You may fall asleep

on 5/5/2009 Thanks for writing about this - I've always thought it was more difficult than this to do a transcendental meditation, and you've give good simple steps I can follow. I've learned that one can change one's dreams, and this seems to be saying what I learned: that eventually I will realize I am in that state (sleep for dreams, meditation for awake) and be able to commune with my higher self, hopefully so I can better myself when fully alert and stop putting my foot in my mouth! ("Money," huh, I wonder what word I should choose now...)
