How to Maintain a Sunless Tan

How to Maintain a Sunless Tan thumbnail
Tanning is popular with both men and women.

Tanning is popular in both men and women primarily because a glowing tan gives you a younger, more youthful appearance. Sunless tanning, using tanning lotions or sprays, is a safe alternative to exposing your skin to the sun's potentially dangerous rays. This process, however, must be followed with proper maintenance. If a sunless tan is not properly cared for, this already costly and time-consuming process can require more frequent applications. Does this Spark an idea?

Instructions

    • 1

Moisturize your entire body with hydrating lotion often, especially after showers.

    • 2

Hydrate your skin by drinking 8 to 10 glasses of water a day. Keeping your skin from getting too dry will help keep skin cells, and your tan, from looking dry.

    • 3

Protect both your skin and your tan from the sun by applying sunscreen daily.

    • 4

Reapply your tan when you notice it starting to fade. Reapplication is important for maintenance. Skin cells shed daily, so your tan will eventually fade.

Tips & Warnings

  • When applying a spray tan or tanning lotion, wear loose clothing immediately after application. This will prevent the tan from rubbing off.

  • Avoid sweating or getting water on your sunless tan for at least four hours after application.

  • Do not apply any lotion until after your first shower.

  • Avoid showering or bathing for at least 12 hours after application.

  • Avoid rubbing your skin dry after a shower. Pat skin dry instead.

  • Avoid swimming in the pool, spa, or ocean for at least 24 hours after application.

  • Avoid exfoliating your body.
