Once you get a domain name you set everything in motion. However, before you do it there's work to be done. When you think about starting a blog/site the first thing you need to do is choose a niche. You need to know what your product is BEFORE you buy the domain. Let's say you decide to sell baby shoes. Once you know the product then you can choose a domain name and title of the site.
For example, a good domain name for this product could be softbabyshoes.com. The title should be the same as the domain name if possible or have the domain name in it. It could be something like Best Soft Baby Shoes Online. This is basic search engine optimization, it's in your best interest to learn and practice it.

Of course, you need to do keyword research. There are 12,000 searches a month for soft baby shoes using Google's keyword tool. When you search for competition there's 16,800 in quotes and 19,700,000 without quotes. The org and net is available for softbabyshoes, the com is taken; I did the research. As you can see this is a doable niche.

Some other things to consider when you get a domain name are: the length, shorter is better. Try to get .com if not available go for org or net. Hyphens are to be avoided; only used if it makes it more readable. Easy to spell, easy to pronounce, simple, and it should describe the site/product.
Don't rush when you get a domain name, take your time. If you're in a hurry set up a free blog on Blogger and test it to see if it's going to be profitable.

If you do set up a Blogger blog and test the market you can transport to Wordpress or whatever platform you choose if it turns out to be a profitable niche.
When you finally decide to get a domain name it's always good to research cost. I use 1&1 for domains and Hostgator as host they're two of the best online for both price and service.
I believe it's best to use separate company's for domain names and hosting. This is because if you have issues with your host they can freeze your domains, then you're in big trouble. Your sites are going down!
Now, it's time to research and get started on your new site!
