Step 1
Go back to nature. Instead of choosing a far-away beach destination for your spring break, visit a state or national park. Not only are they great places to enjoy the outdoors and learn about the environment, they’ll cost you less money.
-
Step 2
If the outdoors isn’t your idea of a great vacation, choose a walking and bicycle-friendly city destination such as Portland, Oregon, Austin, Texas, or San Francisco.
-
Step 3
Stay somewhere green. Camping is a great way to vacation without placing a strain on the environment, but if you choose a hotel, look for a Green Seal. Green Seal (http://www.greenseal.org/) is a non-profit organization that identifies eco-friendly businesses and products, including youth hostels and motels.
-
Step 4
If you’re going to drive, rent a fuel-efficient car if yours doesn’t get good gas mileage. Hertz Rental Cars now offers hybrids, which will also help you save on gas money if your spring break will take you far from home.
-
Step 5
Take the train instead of flying. You’ll get better views, and trains use less fuel than both airplanes and cars.
-
Step 6
Bring your own food in reusable containers to eat while you’re traveling. Eating your own sandwiches and fresh fruits and veggies is both environmentally smart, healthier, and more cost efficient.
-
Step 7
When you’re on your spring break trip, reuse your towel for the duration of your stay instead of having the hotel maid replace it daily. Likewise, request to use the same sheets for your whole trip.
-
Step 8
Like you’d save energy at home, turn off the lights, air conditioning, television, and radio when you’re not in your room.
-
Step 9
Leave your laptop at home. The fewer items you need to plug in, the better.
-
Step 10
Enjoy local foods. You’ll get a good taste of the region and promote a healthier environment if you select foods that didn’t have to be shipped in on fuel-inefficient trucks and airplanes.
