Things You'll Need:
- Internet access
- A browser
-
Step 1
Head over to http://www.irs.gov and find the link for e-filing. Here, the IRS will give you official ways to file your taxes online without having to go through the effort of mailing it in.
-
Step 2
Take their survey and fill out some basic information, and the IRS web site will help you figure out which companies could best suit you when filing your taxes online. They may ask you about how much income you make, and your age. This is because certain companies that are certified by the IRS to file your taxes with have certain restriction policies, and they ask the survey to filter out the ineligible ones for you.
-
Step 3
Based on your results, choose a company from the certified list that the IRS will give you through their web site. These should include companies such as TurboTax and H&R Block for example. When you choose the one you are comfortable with, start filing your federal and state taxes online!
-
Step 4
Get a credit card or your bank account information ready. After you fill out all your information to file your taxes online before April 15th, they may charge you a convenience fee for filing online. Even if this is not the case, they will need a form of payment to put your tax charge on. Have a dependable credit card or your bank account number ready so that the IRS does not delay your tax refund or payment.
-
Step 5
Also, find your last year's AGI or pin number if possible. Your pin number is the one you used if you filed taxes online with a certain company before. However, those reading this probably do not have one yet. So, find your last year's AGI (adjusted gross income), because chances are they will ask you for this as your electronic signature for the online tax forms.
