How to Make Cloth-Covered Buttons
Buttons can be the finishing touch to whatever garment you've made. Whether a shirt, jacket or dress, adding a certain button can make a dull article of clothing come to life. And you don't have to be stuck with the button choices at a sewing store; you can make your own. With only a small piece of leftover fabric, you can make your own cloth-covered buttons. They give any garment a professional look. Making cloth-covered buttons isn't that hard and you'll find everything you need at a sewing store.

1
Pick out the piece of fabric that you want to cover the buttons. It only requires a fabric scrap that's big enough for all of the buttons.
-
2
Buy a button-covering kit at a sewing store. The kits come with a variety of button sizes and have everything you'll need. There should be the base button that will be covered, the back and patterns of circles for you to use as a guide when cutting your fabric.

3
Place the pattern for the size of button you want on your piece of fabric. Use chalk to trace around the pattern, leaving your mark on the piece of fabric. Cut out your button circles.
-
4
Lay your cut button fabric piece over the top of one of the button forms. Make sure the fabric piece is centered over the metal button base. Pull the fabric tight and fold the excess to the back of the button. Try to have an equal amount of excess on all sides of the button back.
-
5
Place the flat backside piece of the button over the folded fabric and snap the back into the base. You should now have a fabric-covered button. Repeat until you've covered all your buttons.
