Things You'll Need:
- Rainbow Resource catalog
- Internet access
- if possible, tickets to a homeschool convention
-
Step 1
Decide what subjects you would like to teach. Most homeschoolers teach mathematics and language arts each year, but vary widely when it comes to other subjects. You can choose to teach several science or history topics in a given year, or you can pick one topic (weather, space, and medieval times are examples) and concentrate on it for a semester or a year.
-
Step 2
Once you have made a list of topics, consult your Rainbow Resource Guide catalog (link below). Look through the subjects and highlight books that look promising.
-
Step 3
Go online to Amazon (link below), and look up the homeschooling books that you are interested in. Read the reviews and try to narrow down your options.
-
Step 4
If possible, visit a homeschool convention. While you are there, talk to the distributors and representatives in each vendor booth. Look through the curriculum and books that you are considering. Don't buy in haste. Make notes about what looks good, and plan to buy at another time. This will prevent impulse buying of homeschooling books that you will never use.
-
Step 5
Talk to people in your area who homeschool. See if they know anything about the books that you are considering, or if anyone is selling the books used.
-
Step 6
Find the best price for the books that you have chosen. If you spent a long time speaking to a vendor at a convention, it is courteous to buy from their company. Otherwise, check Rainbow Resource, Amazon, Ebay, and other vendors before you buy.
