Looking to perk up your rooms? Invite the sunshine in! Yellow--from butter to sunflower--brightens any space and makes it more cheerful. And a twist of lemon adds zest to neutral shades of gray. Here are some ways to work with yellow.

Difficulty: Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  1. Step 1

Wallpaper the dining room in a cheery citron and metallic silver floral paper or paint the entryway a vibrant canary--and put a heather rug underfoot. The striking combination will stimulate conversation while warming up the room.

  2. Step 2

Use yellow and gray in spaces with lots of natural light. Before picking a hue for the walls, paint 2-by-2 foot squares around the room and observe them at different times of day. If you’re timid--test the colors as accents--pillows or a picture frame first.

  3. Step 3

Remember that a little goes a long way. I suggest spreading touches of saffron and gray throughout a space. Think of placing new items in your accent color in a triangle pattern around the room. If you group too many items in the dynamic color scheme together, it can jar the eyes.

  4. Step 4

Add sophistication to yellow and platinum via black accents, mix in a bit of playfulness with powder blue or orange or heighten the drama by paring the combo with a rich plum.

Tips & Warnings
  • Steer clear of golden and silver shades in the bathroom. They can distort the skin's undertones, sallow the complexion and wreak havoc on your makeup application.
