Whether you have a tiny apartment or just way too many shoes, closet storage organization can be an issue. Even if you have a walk in closet, you might not have enough space. You can buy metal or wood closet organizers, but these can cost hundreds of dollars & they might be too big for your closet. Here is how to get closet storage organization no matter the size of your closet.

  1. Step 1

    Donate what you don't need. If you haven't worn it in a year, get rid of it. You'd be suprised how much space you'll free up just by pulling out everything that doesn't fit, or that you don't actually wear. It's great for closet storage organization. It also helps the charity of your choice. Plus, you might even be able to save time in the morning because you won't have to sort through all of those impractical items.

  2. Step 2

    Go seasonal. This is a big part of closet storage organization. Divide your clothes up by season. You can box up what you won't use in the next six months & store it elsewhere. All of those winter coats can be put somewhere else in the summer. This might take a weekend to do, but it's well worth the effort. It's especially helpful if you have small kids who insist on picking out their own outfits in the morning. This way they'll always be weather approriate.

  3. Step 3

    Double your space. If you have a walk in closet you can easily install a second rod halfway down the wall. This doubles your hanging space. Just make sure that you still have a way to store your long dresses so they won't be dragging on the floor. If you have a small closet, you can get a second rod at most big box stores. This has hooks & a chain & it hangs from the first rod. This works well for renters. Just make sure that the first rod can handle the weight of all the extra clothes.

  4. Step 4

    Change out your hangers. There are special slim hangers that take up a lot less space in your closet. You can even find space saving hangers that really help in closet storage organization. These have multiple hooks on them so you can hang several items of clothing from one hanger. Invest in matching hangers so your closet has a sleeker appearance. Look for strong hangers made out of wood or steel if they will be holding multiple items. This way they won't bend or break. Also make sure that whatever line you choose has a way to hang up skirts & pants. Just make sure that you buy a few extra hangers of whatever you choose so you'll be able to add to your existing wardrobe.

  5. Step 5

    Take care of your shoes. These can take up a lot of room & totally throw off your closet storage organization. You can buy a shoe rack that keeps your footwear in place. You can also store your shoes in shoe boxes or even tupperware. This keeps them from getting dusty. Take a polaroid of each pair of shoes & affix it to the box. This way you'll know what is on the inside without ever having to open it.

  6. Step 6

    Organize it. Keep like items together such as suits or tops. This helps you pick out outfits quickly. You can even organize by color so you'll be able to coordinate by your mood. Just make sure that you put something back from where you got it. This way it won't take you an entire weekend to organize your closet next time.

  7. Step 7

    Look for empty space. You might be able to fit a dresser in your closet. This is a fantastic solution if you have a small bedroom. Place it under the clothes that only hang halfway down the wall. You might also have empty space on the shelf above your closet where you can store purses or even put folding clothes.
