Turn off the TV and turn on your child's imagination!
Turn off the TV and turn on your child's imagination!

The last week of every April and September is National Turn Off Your TV Week. At first, the thought may seem daunting, but your family can benefit from unplugging the boob tube and spending the time in more imaginative and healthy pursuits.

Difficulty: Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • an active imagination
  • a tolerance for a certain amount of whining
  • a safe place to play outside
  • art and craft supplies
  1. Step 1

Gather your family ahead of time and make plans for some fun activities that you may like to participate in. Expect some complaining and whining at first, but as you let your family know that you are not going to change your mind, chances are that they will embrace the upcoming time of no television.

  2. Step 2

When the time comes, unplug the televisions. If necessary, move them out of the room, or cover them with a tarp or blanket. This will serve as a visual reminder that the tv is not to be turned on at all during the time period specified.

  3. Step 3

Have fun! Use the tv-free time to try new recipes, enjoy the spring or fall weather, go on daytrips, throw a frisbee at the park, build a sand castle at the beach, fly a kite, go to the library, read books aloud, listen to music, visit relatives, make a scrapbook, or enjoy other arts and crafts.

  4. Step 4

Plan another television-free week sometime soon. It's not necessary to wait for the next official TV-Turnoff Week.

Tips & Warnings
  • Stay positive, and your optimistic attitude will rub off on your family.
  • Don't plan for every minute. Children benefit from making their own fun!
