These isles are usually located in the specialty foods section of your store and contain wheat free pasta’s, bread’s , cake and bread mix, cookies and bags of gluten free flours like soy and potato. One thing you will notice in this isle is that everything is dramatically marked up in price. For example a regular loaf of bread in the bakery isle cost around a buck, as where a loaf of gluten free bread cost 4-6 bucks and the loaf is about 1/4th the size. Save your receipts to use for taxes when you buy gluten free products because you can write them off as a medical expense.

Step two to buying gluten free products. Check online. There are web stores online that sell specialty foods and gluten free products and ship them right to your house. This method will result in savings in the products bought compared to in a store but may eventually cost the same or more due to shipping so check for online stores that may include free shipping and buy up in bulk.

Step three to buying gluten free products. Go to your local health food or bulk stores. Shopping at your local bulk foods store you can find bag yourself gluten free products like flour and pastas to take home and use in homemade gluten free products. Soy flour is the most like wheat as where it works out to 1cup= 1cup when substituting to make gluten free breads or cakes.

on 6/23/2009 Cross contamination is always a problem at the grocery stores. When buying bulk, if from a bulk bin, there is no way to assure that a product will still be gluten free. Others could have used the same scoop for wheat flour, or contamination could have happened when restocking bulk bins.
If you want to buy bulk, ask for it to be taken out of a new bag, before it is restocked by employees.
Cross contamination can happen and I believe it is one of the problems when dealing with refractory sprue, that does not respond to a gluten free diet.
