Things You'll Need:
- Basket large enough for items
- Mexican food and nonfood items
- Hot glue gun or glue dots
- Newspaper or Kraft paper
- Vibrant colored shredded paper
- Cellophane
- Coordinating curling ribbon
- Small card to attach on front
-
Step 1
Decide on what items to purchase for the basket. Shop your local market or Mexican grocer for the items you'll need. You can also find Mexican foods that are perfect for basket filling online.
Include items such as jars of assorted salsa and chili powders, packaged tortilla chips, Mexican cornbread mix or packets of seasoning and dried chili peppers. Add bagged, dried pinto beans, navy beans or rice because these add bulk to your basket and help make a great foundation. Include some spicy habanero fruit preserves or Mexican wedding cake cookies for dessert.
Purchase nonfood items as well such as a Mexican cookbook, salsa bowl, chili pepper theme napkins or kitchen towels. Pick up a Latin music CD or a gift card for their favorite Mexican restaurant. -
Step 2
Find a basket large enough to contain all your items. You can get cheap baskets from dollar stores or thrift stores if you're trying to keep costs down. You could also find a sombrero large enough to hold your items and use that as a basket. Another idea is to cut out the top portion off of a festive piñata and arrange your items inside.
-
Step 3
Fill the basket with crumpled newspaper or Kraft paper to add a foundation for the items to rest on. Now put down a layer of your shredded paper. You can stick to one color or combine a few for a more festive look. Try to place the heavier, larger items in first and toward the middle. Fasten each item down to the crumpled paper with a bit of hot glue or a glue dot. Be sure to place the smaller items such as seasoning packets toward the front. Fill in any gaps and empty spaces with more shredded paper. The idea is to make it look as full as possible.
-
Step 4
Once your basket is filled, it's time to place it in the center of the cellophane and bring all corners up. Tie it off with coordinating curling ribbon, attach your card to the front and now you have a perfect gift basket that any Mexican food lover would adore!
