Step 1
Keep regular watch over your cat when they use their litter box. If you notice that your cat is making regular attempts to urinate without success they may have a urinary tract infection or other urinary tract illness.
-
Step 2
Watch for a change in where your cat urinates. If your cat suddenly starts to urinate outside the litter box this could be a sign that they have a UTI or other health problem. Cats that urinate outside their litter box tend to like using a bathtub or tiles floor.
-
Step 3
Investigate you cat's urine. This isn't the most pleasant thing to do, but it only involves taking a look. If you notice blood in your cat's urine then your cat has a health issue. However, there isn't always blood in your cat's urine when they have infection as it is one of the less common symptoms.
-
Step 4
Notice how much urine your cat is passing and if they cry when trying to urinate. A cat with a urinary tract infection or other urinary tract health problem will often cry out in pain. They will strain to urinate and often only pass a small amount of urine.
