When creating a website file, converting a website file or opening a website file, it may be necessary to change the URL file extension. There are different file extensions on URLs such as .php, .html and .asp. You may need to change the file extension to view that file in a particular program or to make changes to that file. Follow these steps to remove the URL file extension.

  • URL file
  • Computer
  1. Step 1

    Locate the URL file on your computer's hard drive.

  2. Step 2

    Right-click on the URL file that you just located.

  3. Step 3

    Navigate to "Rename" from the list of options that is displayed.

  4. Step 4

    Type in the name you would like this file to have.

  5. Step 5

    Add the new file extension you would like this file to have.
