How to Help Calm a Cat for a Plane Ride

You are going on a trip in an airplane and your cat is going, too. There are some things to help the trip go smoothly and keep your cat as calm as possible.

Instructions

1. Check with the airline to find out their rules and requirements. Most airlines will allow your cat to ride with you in an approved carrier. A lot of cat owners feel this is a better choice than to allow a cat to ride with the luggage. However, if it is a long trip, decide what will work best for you.

2. If you anticipate that your cat will be stressed out, there are some things you can give to him/her. A few drops of Rescue Remedy (a flower essence to ease anxiety) may help. There are other similar products on the market you might want to try. See Resources below.

3. Lavender and chamomile having soothing properties. You can try using one of these to help your cat to enjoy the ride. Put some on a cotton ball and put into the corner of the cat's carrier. Or, you can even dilute one of the above with two-parts water and spray the bottom of the carrier 30 minutes to an hour before the trip.

4. Talk to your vet about what he/she recommends for your pet.

5. Have a safe and enjoyable trip!

Tips & Warnings

• Don't forget a small, favorite toy to soothe your cat and remind them of home.
• Be sure the water dispenser works properly. Especially on a longer trip.
• If the airline will let you, add something like a small washcloth that has your scent (you can sleep with it under your shirt).
