Choosing a lawyer to handle your Mesothelioma case is a serious matter. Attorneys in this field are eager to find new clients. Be sure you take the following steps when searching for someone to represent your case.

Difficulty: Moderately Challenging
Instructions
  1. Step 1

There are many ways to start your search for a lawyer to handle your Mesothelioma case. If you know someone, or their family, who has personally gone through having Mesothelioma and using a lawyer, find out who they used and ask them in detail about their experience.

There is no replacement for a good referral.

  2. Step 2

Get online and meet some people who have gone through this or are going through the same thing you are. Ask them what course of action they have taken and learn more about their experiences.

  3. Step 3

Contact your local or state Bar Association for a list of lawyers who handle Mesothelioma cases.

  4. Step 4

The most challenging way to find a good lawyer is by searching the Internet. Sure it's easy to find hundreds, if not thousands of lawyers who are willing to take one your case, but it's a lot harder to sort through the advertisements, mumbo jumbo, and lawyers who may refer your case to someone else. Although the Internet offers unlimited resources in finding lawyers to represent Mesothelioma cases, it could take a lot of work to find the right one.

  5. Step 5

Once you are face-to-face with a lawyer, there are a lot of questions you can ask to make sure you have found the right person to represent you.

*How many Mesothelioma cases has their law firm handled?
*Will the lawyer you are speaking to be handling your case or will he/she be referring your case to someone else? (If so, you should be sitting in front of that person)
*How many Mesothelioma cases has this specific lawyer handled?
*What were the outcomes of each case? How many were settled? How many went to trial?
*Is the area of Mesothelioma one of specialty for this firm and/or lawyer?
*What should you expect from this process? Have the attorney present you with an outline/timeline of how your case might go.
*Have the lawyer outline the costs, fees, and any other expenses for this type of case, so you know what to expect.

  6. Step 6

Use your best judgement and ask your self some questions:

*Do you feel comfortable with this lawyer?
*Does he/she have good communication skills?
*What is this lawyer's/law firm's reputation?

  7. Step 7

Make sure you do your research thoroughly before deciding who to use. The outcome of your case can vary greatly depending on who handles your case.

Tips & Warnings
  • There is no replacement for a good referral.
  • The lawyer needs to interview you, but more importantly you are there to interview him/her.
  • Take family members (especially if they have a background in law) with you to interview and meet with the lawyers you are considering.
  • Ask the lawyer you are interviewing if they intend to handle your case or refer it out (if they refer it out, they are probably getting a fee to refer you).
