To calculate your recommended water intake per day, you should first assess your lifestyle and how much you weigh. Weight and lifestyle are the biggest factors in determining your needed water intake per day. Your body is composed of 40-50% water so you must remain hydrated to keep your body in optimum health, but how much water is recommended for daily intake?

Difficulty: Easy
Instructions
  1. Step 1

To calculate your recommended water intake per day, you should consider the general rule of halving your current weight and using that number as a guideline for how many ounces of water you need per day.

For example, if you weigh 150 pounds, divide that by 2 to give you 75 -- so you should aim to consume 75 ounces of water a day.

  2. Step 2

To make this calculation more tangible, take that number and divide it by 8 (because there are 8 ounces in a cup). So 75 divided by 8 equals 9.5, so you should aim for drinking 9.5-10 cups of water per day.

A good way to help regulate your water intake is to carry a re-usable water bottle with you and keep track of how many ounces of water you are drinking a day.

  3. Step 3

The above is simply a rough calculation of the recommended water intake per day, you must also consider your lifestyle.

If you workout a lot, then you will likely need more water because of the water you lose while working out.

Another factor to consider is your current diet. If you eat a lot of fruits and vegetables, then you may need a little less water as most fruits and vegetable contain a lot of water in them.

On the contrary, if you consume a lot of processed foods, such as canned soups or microwaved meals, then you should increase your intake because those foods are often high in sodium.
