How to Make Tie-Dye
The art of tie-dye first got attention in the 1960s. Tie-dye is a creative way to use colored dye to recreate clothing. Use old clothing or tie-dye fabric that can be made into scarfs, hats, belts and throws.
Things You'll Need
- Dye
- Rubber bands
- Plastic pans
- Fabric
- White T-shirt
- White skirt
- White cotton hat
- White scarf

Purchase fabric tie-dye at your local craft store. Three to four different colors are usually a good to start.

Put the dye in separate plastic dish pans for each color. Fill each pan halfway with hot water.

Twist areas on the fabric and tie off with three or four rubber bands. Put fabric in hot water for two to three minutes. Space the twisted areas out so there will be a tie-dye pattern made on the white clothing or fabric. The bigger amount of the fabric in the tie-dye twist, the bigger the tie-dye area will be. Make any kind of design with the tie-dye.

Allow the fabric to dry. Rinse with cold water; this will set the tie-dye colors and any excess dye will come out. Let dry again.

Tips & Warnings
New or used clothing can be used
Adorn with beads,lace or ribbon for even more creativity
Make your own tye dye "art" wallhanging with silk or cotton fabric
Wash hands after working with dye.
Wear gloves to protect your hands.
