1
Open up a new document in Microsoft Word, Open Office or even Notepad. Position your fingers over the 10 Key pad to the right of your keyboard.
-
2
You'll want to always keep your middle finger on the 5 key, which normally has a little nub on it so you can find it without looking. Put your index finger over the 4, your middle finger over the number 5, and your ring finger over the number 6 key.

Imagine in your mind, or look with your eyes, at the 1,2,3 then the 4,5,6 then the 7,8,9.
Your index finger will be in charge of the first numbers, 1, 4 and 7. Your middle finger will be in charge of the 2, 5 and 8, and your ring finger will be in charge of the 3, 6 and 9. -
4
Now open up the phone book to any page with lots of phone numbers. Start at the first one. Let's say its 751-8485. Try not to look, but instead remember in your mind where the 7 is on your 10 key pad. If you have to recite in your mind, 1,2,3... 4,5,6... 7,8,9...until you remember, that's fine. But the 7 is the first number on the top. So take your index finger from it's resting position on the 4 and move up to type the 7. Make sense?

5
The 5 is easy. It's right in the middle and your middle finger is already resting on top of it. Just continue going like that until you get faster. It will take a little practice, especially your first go at learning 10 key.

6
To learn 10 key effectively, you might look at the numbers on the 10 key pad in the beginning, but it will be much more productive if you try to remember in your mind and look at the screen to see if you typed the correct number. That way your fingers will learn 10 key as well.
-
7
Good luck! Those who learn 10 key will have a valuable skill for any office job, or to help speed up work at home. Learning 10 key will work for computer keypads and adding machine work as well.
