      Every state has its own rules and regulations, I am going by NJ department of labor. Go to your nearest One stop career center or unemployment office.

      Tell the receptionist that you are interested in Job Training. She will tell you to go to orientation and schedule you for a TAB test. Orientation is about 1.5 hours depends how detailed the reps speech is.

      Next, you have to take the Tab test. This test is very easy, all they want to know is to see if you have a 4th grade education level or more. The test consist of Math (addition, subtraction, multiplication, division, fractions, adding fractions. The other part is reading (very easy) In the orientation, they will give you a study guide to prepare you for the TAB test. Math is like 2.5 hours, and reading is around 1 hour. or the other way around, I forgot. If you failed the test, you are going to have to take additional courses to retake the test. When you are done with the test, you go home.

      You have to wait until a representative calls you to see if you passed the test. If you did, then they are going to schedule you to take your work shops. You are going to have to take 5 workshops before you talk to a counselor. There are 1 workshop per week.

      Week 1: In your first workshop, it will be mostly about finding a job online. And most of the job searching is on the state sites. This workshop is very informative, it helps a lot. In this orientation, the speaker is going to hand out a log. A 6 week log for job searching, despite that you are going for job training, you still need to look for a job. You have to log in all the places you applied for and sent your resume to. (1.5 hours) Also in this workshop, you will be doing a survey about your career interests and training. This survey will let the counselors know what training you are interested in.

      Week 2: Resume 1, in this workshop, that are going to teach you how to write a resume, easy! (1 hour)

      Week 3: Resume 2, in this work shop you have to bring your resume. The speaker will review you resume to see if it needs any changes. If they love it, you go home. If not, you have to stay to edit your resume. Make sure you have a disk handy. I save my resume in my email account as a draft. (:20. min - 1.5 hours)

      Week 4: Interviews techniques. This workshop will help you being interviewed (what to say, what not to say, etc...) (1.5 hours)

      Week 5: This workshop is for Job search techniques, this is kind of an overview of all the workshops you have done, and also this workshop is to prepare you for the counselor meeting. (1 Hour) Now all you have to do is wait for the counselor to call you, it may take a week. If by any chance they do not call you, call them. Sometimes they may be busy and your folder might of passed them.

      Week 6-7: meeting with the counselor, they will let you know what to do next. You are going to have to search for your training school and to see if the training school is WIA (Workforce Investment Act) eligible. You and to go screen the school, make sure you do not sign with any training school until you meet back with your counselor. Once you find your training school, bring all the information back to your counselor. They will prepare you for you to start training. Once they say the OK, smile and go to school. DO NOT DROP OUT OR GIVE UP!!!

      Once you are done training and you get certified, find your job or career.

Tips & Warnings

  • If you find a job before your workshops are over, you are not eligible for training.
