Fiberglass is a really useful product that can be shaped and molded into many different shapes and dimensions. I will be covering basic fiberglass layup procedures in this essay.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  1. Step 1

Start with your shapes and cut them out of the fiberglass careful not to disrupt the fiber straightness when cutting. Roll up you cloth cuttings and bring them to the work area. Unroll your cloth onto the foam or mold that you have prepared. Be certain that the fibers remain straight and tightly woven to ensure strength of the fiberglass when cured.

  2. Step 2

Mix your two part epoxy and hardener according to the directions and then pour the mixed product on the fiberglass. Just pour it on and then squidgy the extra epoxy away from the center of the cloth, keeping the fibers straight. Wet the entire cloth area that needs to be worked on. The epoxy will take the shine out of the fiber and then soak into it. This is important, the epoxy gives the fiber strength.

  3. Step 3

When the lay up is complete, trim the edges so everything will stay put. Make sure the epoxy is evenly coated on the fiberglass and then allow the epoxy to hard. If you have any further lay ups to do on a part then use peel ply along the edges to make the surface prepared for the next layup. That is how fiberglass is prepared and shaped into parts.

Tips & Warnings
  • Keep your fiberglass evenly wet for best strength and always keep your fibers straight.
  • Work in a well ventilated area the fumes give a terrible headache if you breath them for to long.
