Look for a New Job
Look for a New Job

Your job search does not need to be stressful if you are well-organized and think about your needs, wants, and skills before beginning your search for the perfect career.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Know what you kind of position you want before you begin your job search. Before you begin searching for jobs online on in the newspaper, think about what positions interest you and what skills your can offer an employer. Make a list of your ideal jobs, but keep an open mind and consider all reasonable career opportunities that come your way.

  2. Step 2

Prepare your job search documents in advance. Before you begin to look for a job, have a draft of your resume and cover letter ready. You should also have on hand copies of your academic transcripts and proof of your professional certifications. Employers fill job openings quickly, and if you do not have your documents prepared in advance, you could miss out on valuable career opportunities.

  3. Step 3

Talk to your professional references before you begin your job search. Before sending out your first resume, tell your professional references you are looking for a job. Make sure it's okay for prospective employers to contact them. Also consider getting having your references write you a general letter of recommendation that you can provide prospective employers during your job interviews.

  4. Step 4

Be broad in where you search for your new job. Although it’s tempting to look exclusively on the Internet, be sure to use traditional job search techniques, such as your local newspaper, trade magazines, job fairs, career centers, bulletin boards, and professional networking.

  5. Step 5

Stay active during your job search. If you are currently unemployed, consider doing part-time or freelance work while you search for a permanent job. Not only can temporary or freelance jobs open up doors to long-term careers, they can help you stay focused and positive while filling in employment gaps on your resume.
