Step 1
Focus on your child and include him or her in planning the party. Pick a theme that expresses your child's interests. Don't feel pressured to provide expensive, elaborate outings. If you do, you will be setting a precedent for years to come. Children are simple people. Keep the party that way too.
-
Step 2
A good rule to follow for inviting guests is to invite the number of your child's age, plus one. Too big of a crowd can overwhelm a child and turn into mass chaos. Decide whether having parents come is a help, or hindrance. Clearly label invitations accordingly.
-
Step 3
Keep the refreshments "kid-friendly". Cupcakes are a great idea for little ones rather than an expensive sheet cake. Children can help decorate them for a fun activity, too. Take a trip to the Dollar Store with your child to pick out simple prizes for games, and to fill goodie bags.
-
Step 4
Good parties are short and sweet. Two hours is plenty of time for a toddler birthday party, and three hours is more than enough for an older child's party. The more organized you are, the better things will run. If possible have another adult available to help with games or refreshments.

on 3/28/2009 Thanks for this article! Very helpful as I am tempted to overdo things a bit. Thanks for reminding us that "simple" is most always the best rule!
