How to Learn Vocabulary, The Fun Way

How to Learn Vocabulary, The Fun Way thumbnail
Vocabulary is the cornerstone of learning any subject and should be taught in a fun way.

When learning a new subject, the basic material must be learned before it becomes possible to understand more complicated information. The simplest information is how we talk about a topic, or the vocabulary needed to discuss it. Once that is mastered, it becomes easier to build upon the information to talk about more complex ideas and think more critically about what is being taught. However, because this is the first step, it can be difficult if you don't have any prior knowledge of the topic. Therefore, it is important to make the learning process fun so the knowledge is maintained.

  1. Having Fun Learning Vocabulary

Define the words. Before vocabulary can be learned, it is necessary to have the definitions of the words written in a way that the student is able to understand. Using index cards, write the word on one side and definition on the other. Also make another set that has one word or definition on each card. These cards will not only be used to learn the definitions but provide an easy way to check answers during other activities and games.

Match the words and the definitions. This is an easy way to study vocabulary independently. It can also be made into a fun memory game. First, divide the cards between words and definitions and then turn over each word and definition so that you can't see them. Then one at a time, turn over a word and definition and decide if they are correct. If they are, keep the cards and take another turn. Continue until you have made all the pairs. If there is more than one person, take turns making pairs. The winner will be the one who makes the most matches.

Another matching game that works well in a group is Vocabulary Bingo. The teacher or students can fill in a grid with each word. The teacher will then call out the definition and the students will cover up the appropriate word until someone achieves bingo.

Practice explaining the definition or naming the word. Once you are able to define vocabulary in your own words, it will be easy to use it. One fun way to do this is to play reverse Jeopardy. Instead of having to name the word, you explain the definition. When correct, you will gain "money." Depending on the classroom or teacher's budget, prizes can be offered for varying amounts of correct answers.

Also, using the words in a sentence, no matter how crazy, can help you to remember the definition. It also forces you to use the word in a way that makes the definitions more functional. Doing so makes the vocabulary words something that is part of daily life and not just useful in one school setting.
