Things You'll Need:
- Interior design magazines
- Creativity
-
Step 1
The first step is to peruse some interior design magazines and tear out the pages you like. It is fun to get a folder to store them in and once you have them all compiled, see if there are any reoccurring patterns. Is there a particular color combination that is repeated? What about the styles? After you decide what colors and style you like, it's time to move on to step number two of our money saving tips.
-
Step 2
Next, start with one room at a time and decide what will stay and what will go. Look at your furniture with an objective eye. Can the curtains be dyed a different color? Can your furniture be stained or painted a different color? What about couch covers? They come in many different colors and designs. I recommend shopping online at www.walmart.com. They have a much larger selection of home decor' than what is available in stores and they ship site to store for free!
-
Step 3
Once you've decided what you will be keeping, it is time to sell the items that won't match your new decor. I recommend selling items on Craigslist. If you've never done this before, than you are missing out. Literally within five minutes of posting an item you can have several buyers lined up, and within a half of an hour you could have the cash in your hands and the item picked up! Post items for approximately half of the brand new cost of the item. This is a lot higher than garage sale prices and you don't have to sit outside for half of the day to make money.
-
Step 4
Use the money you have just earned from Craigslist to buy new items at Walmart.com or even purchase items from Craigslist or at your local used furniture stores. Also, many towns have re-stores which sell items such as paints etc. for discounted rates and all of the proceeds go to benefit Habitat For Humanity!
-
Step 5
Don't forget to check out your local fabric store. Even if sewing isn't your thing, you could easily recover a pillow, or buy fabric dye to freshen up your bedspread etc. Also, Ross sells beautiful, inexpensive home furnishings and baskets. Simply adding a few lined wicker baskets can freshen up your shelves.
