Wearing Cufflinks

So you've rented a tuxedo and now you're wondering "How do I wear cufflinks and studs?" Cuff links have gone from being a high fashion men's accessory to a mainstream style must-have. In fact, many men are now wearing cufflinks with more than just tuxedos. They're becoming a popular accessory with men's business attire. Cufflinks and studs are an easy way to add a little personality and "bling" to any wardrobe. Read on for how to wear cufflinks and studs.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Cufflinks
  • Studs
  • French cuff shirt
  1. Step 1
    Give cufflinks a try

    Give cufflinks a try

Before you officially wear cufflinks for the first time, you may want to give them a trial run. Cuff links feel different than a buttoned shirt sleeve and they may take some getting used to.

  2. Step 2
Match cuff links with your tie

Whether you're wearing cufflinks with a tuxedo or with a business suit, you should match them to your shirt and tie (or bow tie if you're also wearing studs). Men's accessories should also match the formality of the event.

When picking out a shirt, be sure to get a french cuff shirt or a convertible (which can be worn with buttons or cufflinks). It's not possible to wear men's cufflinks or studs with a traditional button down dress shirt. If you're not sure, look at the cuffs to see if they have buttons or if both sides of the sleeve have a small hole where the cufflink can slip through.

  4. Step 4

When you're ready to put on your cuff links, put your shirt on first. Leave the shirt unbuttoned if you're wearing studs. Button it up if you are skipping the studs this time.

  5. Step 5
    Close the swivel

Flip the cuff link swivel bar closed so it's in line with the other two bars. It should not look like a "T."

  6. Step 6
    Pinch cuff to align holes

To wear cuff links, match up the holes on each shirt cuff by pinching the cuffs together. The shirt cuffs should not be overlapping, instead the inside of both cuffs should be touching.

  7. Step 7
    Slip cufflink through both holes

Take the cufflink, and starting with the front cuff, slip the stem side through both holes. Don't be afraid to ask for help, putting on a cuff link isn't the easiest thing to do with one hand.

  8. Step 8

Once it's through, flip the swivel bar down to keep the cufflink in place.

  9. Step 9

Repeat on the other shirtsleeve. Always making sure the designer side of the cufflink is facing out so it can be seen.

  10. Step 10

Now it's time to put on the studs. Most tuxedo shirts will give you the option of wearing studs or buttoning the shirt. Studs should only be worn if you're wearing a bow tie since a windsor tie would cover the studs.

To put on the shirt studs start with the second button hole. Ignore the little button, the stud will act as the button.

  12. Step 12

From the inside of the shirt, slip the stud through the first hole (where the button would be).

  13. Step 13

Use the stud to fasten the shirt, as you normally would with a traditional button.

  14. Step 14

Repeat with the rest of the studs with the exception of the top button. You don't wear a stud at the collar since it will be covered by a bow tie.

  15. Step 15

Wear your cufflinks and studs with confidence knowing you are adding fun, style and a little personality to your wardrobe.
