Designing a wedding ring set is not as difficult as it might seem and it is a lot of fun. It gives you a chance to get unique rings, made exactly the way you want them to be. It also provides you with a chance to express your style and ensure that your rings are one-of-a-kind.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • A computer with Internet
  • Pad of paper and a pencil
  1. Step 1

Get some ideas on what it is that you really want - I found that looking at pictures of rings online helps you to get some possible ideas for what you want your wedding rings to look like. Make a special folder on your computer and save all the pictures that you like (even if all you like is just a small detail - f.e, you like the shape of the stone, or the pattern on the band, etc.).

  2. Step 2

Choose what metal you want your wedding rings to be made of. You have a choice of gold, white gold, sterling silver, and platinum, to name the most popular ones. If you aren't sure which metal to choose, research their pros and cons to see which one you'd like most (f.e, silver might tarnish as time passes by, whereas platinum doesn't).

  3. Step 3

Decide if you want any diamonds or other stones and what size and shape they should be in. After looking at wedding rings pictures online, you probably have an idea what you like.

  4. Step 4

Decide if you want any knots or patterns on the wedding bands. You might want to find something that has a meaning (f.e, my husband and I decided to have Celtic heart knot engraved on our wedding bands - we spent a while researching the meaning of various Celtic knots before we found the one we both liked).

  5. Step 5

By now you should have a general idea of what your wedding rings should look like. Try to draw them - even if the drawing isn't perfect, it will help you visualize your idea better.

  6. Step 6

Find a jeweler in your area who is willing to work with your idea and make the wedding rings the way you want them to be. This process is going to involve several steps, as the rings from your drawings will be re-designed in a professional program, consulted with you, cast in wax, etc. before they're finally cast. The advantage of doing it this way is that you are involved in every step and can make sure that your wedding rings will be exactly the way you want them to be. It also enables you to make corrections along the way, if you don't like the way something looks.

Tips & Warnings
  • Be as creative as you can and make your wedding rings unique. My husband and I designed our wedding bands and my engagement ring together and had a local jeweler create the rings for us. They ended up being so much more beautiful than we expected and the whole experience was wonderful - we wouldn't have our rings made any other way!
  • Trust your jeweler's expertise - if they say that the band would be too thin to support the stone, f.e., they more than likely know what they are talking about. Be prepared to listen to their advice before making your final decision.
